Go Fours – A fresh face, #93 Dave Larkin, joined regulars #85 Robert Allerellie and #17 Jim Hill in victory lane during qualifying. In the feature the #93 was strong, staying in the mix at the front, and in the end a Larkin was holding the twin checkered flags in victory lane, but it wasn’t Dave. For the second week in a row the #73, piloted by Ron Larkin Jr., raced to the front and claimed the win. The most excitement though, came from watching #77 Bryn Rennie pick his way to the front, and then battle with the #93. During a three-way battle for the lead, including Rennie, Hill and D. Larkin, Dave went to the inside, trying to push his #93 through the lane and by the #77. But Rennie and Larkin made contact, and both cars baubled in the corner. Rennie was able to correct, Dave Larkin was not so fortunate. The #93 spun to the infield and brought out a caution, sending him to the back and extinguishing his hopes for his first feature win. The green flag came down with only two laps to go, and Bryn Rennie used the whole track and all the time he had to find a way by the Montgomery Superstation #73, but it was all for not. Ron Larkin Jr. crossed the line first, leaving the #77 of Rennie in second. Robert Allerellie finished third in the #85, followed by #22 Ken Turner and #17 Jim Hill.
Street Stocks – It’s widely known that cars will drive faster and handle better when all four tires stay on the car. Two weeks ago, September 8th, Dave Bennett lost the lead in the closing laps of the feature because the right rear wheel was making its way off the car. Though Bennett was able to complete the race, a third place finish was not what he wanted when trying to catch Randy Rusnell in the point’s race. So this week, September 15th, he made sure that all four wheels were secure before the feature, and it helped. Bennett started poll in the feature, taking the lead early as he had done the previous week, and it was almost deja vu when #72 Randy Rusnell and #20 Gary Slama rushed to his bumper. The front three left the rest of the field behind, not a bad move with the racing being three-wide behind them. Rusnell was all over Bennett, up and down the back end of the car so much that in the end you would have sworn that the once green bumper of the #45 had to be blue after the feature. But for all the bumps, rubs, and taps, Bennett held on, shut the door on Rusnell, and was able to pull away from Gary Slama enough to put his full concentration on staying in front of that #72. And he did. The #45 from Fergus, Dave Bennett, won the feature race, closely followed by #72 Randy Rusnell, and then the #20 of Gary Slama. #06 Steve Brook finished in fourth, while #95 Kevin Benish rounded out the tail end scoring another top five finish.
Thunder Cars – When you’re hot, you’re hot. Another good night for Randy Rutherford in the #38, not too bad of a night for Kevin Gallant in the #31, and watch out for the men in black, #89 Bob Chenoweth, #91 Randy Richard, and #12 Mike Post. First, in qualifying Kevin Gallant finally made his way back to victory lane, showing that there was hope he could end his season as strong as it had started. Gallant started outside the top ten in the feature, and would have to carefully pick his way through the tough field to get to the front. The guys who started up front though, Rutherford, Chenoweth and Richard, would be tough to beat, and very particular on who would be allowed to join their private battle for the win. Right from the start those front three drivers left the field behind. Chenoweth was tapping on the #38, letting Rutherford know he was there, and looking to go by, but he had Richard tapping on him with the same message. Behind them was the battle for fourth, where #29 Steve Cashmore was desperately trying to hold off Mike Post, who was desperately trying to repress the #31 of Gallant. Post eventually got by Cashmore, and was quite quick on his exit from the battle, leaving Gallant and Cashmore to scrap for fifth now. Gallant got in front and held the spot, but could not catch the #12 of Post as the white flag came down showing one lap to go. Randy Rutherford led the field around, Chenoweth still on him, and Richard sitting in third. Down to the line, collecting another feature win, #38 Randy Rutherford. Bob Chenoweth brought the #89 in at second, and #91 Randy Richard followed him across in third. Mike Post raced to the finish to grab fourth, and Kevin Gallant rounded out the top five, finishing ahead of Steve Cashmore.
Late Models – A race not featured in the schedule, the Late Models were added to the schedule to make-up for the fogged-out race from back on May 26th. A last chance qualifier was run to accommodate drivers who were not there on the 26th, and fill the field as drivers who were there that night were missing from the lineup. #39 Harry Topp won the last chance race. The Late Model feature was won by #36 Bill Jackson (sorry, no photo available), and Rob Munday finished second in the #5, with #48 Gerry Wheaton in third. #57 Rob Maas finished fourth, and #82 Jason Shaw fifth. Not too much more can be said about the feature, accept that it was full of bumping, tapping, pushing, riding drivers high, and a lot of machinery was damaged. It looked about the same as in the beginning of the summer when they raced under the full moon.
DASH FOR CASH – Sponsored By COUGAR DELIVERY SERVICE, same day delivery for when “It just has to go today.” Cougar Delivery put up the money for a Late Model Dash For Cash, won by the #48 Gerry Wheaton. It was a fun race to watch, so much so that we’ll do it again tonight! Cougar Delivery Service has sponsored us again, so tonight there’s more Late Model action than usual, thanks to the Cougar Delivery Service Dash For Cash.
Powder Puff – The Ladies race, where the ladies get a chance to take a ride around Flamboro behind the wheel of a stock car. It got off to a sad start as out of corner four Kathy Hall had to pull the #45 to the infield (the same #45 of Dave Bennett that had just won the feature), as the car went up in smoke. From there it was obvious who had been in a racecar, who had fear, and who was out for fun. The winner, proving that all the of her son’s driving talent didn’t only come from the males in the family, was Sharon Shepherd, Petey’s Mom, who drove Ray Gowan’s #10 Thunder Car. Cheryl Dinner finished second in the #90 (of Darrin Dinner), and finishing third was Kim Radcliff in the #91 (of Randy Richard).
