June 16, 2001 – Who Would Be King ?
By Joshua Paxton

Canadian Vintage Modifieds Return – The Canadian Vintage Modifieds brought their traveling band of racers to Flamboro Speedway for their first of two appearances in 2001.  In exciting qualifying action, #18 Murray Ducharme, #27 Dave Lacey, and #19 John Karley collected heat wins.  In the consolation race, where there was a big corner one mess that started when the #24 of Ray Hughes got tied up with the #47 Nina Ruelens and collected #89 Matt Bedard and #64 Mark Klotz, the survivor was #81 Jeff Shaw who picked up the checkers in victory lane.  In the feature, Murray Ducharme took his #18 to the front and ran away early, but was continuously brought back to the pack by cautions.  One lap was completed before a multi-car collision once again slowed the pace.  6 cars were turned around and hooked-up on the back chute, forcing a caution.  The green flag was dropped again, and this time not even a lap was completed before the glow of the yellow light illuminated the corners again.  #82 Rob Parker had spun in corner one.  And this was to be the pattern for the night.  There was a caution for a tête-á-tête between #81 Jeff Shaw and #24 Ray Hughes; Another spin by #81 Jeff Shaw; and a spin by #36 Gary Elliott in corner four.  Finally, at about halfway, the Vintage Modifieds got sorted out around the track and the yellow flag was given a break.  The drivers fell in line, lead by by the #18 of Ducharme,  who was being chased by #38 Doug Hood, #27 Dave lacey, #37 David Elliott, #23 Glenn Colling, #8 Paul Henderson, and #19 John Karley, all in a train.  And that’s the way they ran for the last half of the race, caution free, until lap 24 of the scheduled 25 lap race, when Dave Lacey looped the #27 and took the #19 of Karley in the nose.  The race ended under caution, with #18 Murray Ducharme claiming the feature win.  He was followed by #38 Doug Hood, #37 David Elliott, #23 Glenn Colling, and #24 Ray Hughes.  The Canadian Vintage Modifieds return to Flamboro August 4th.

Flamboro4 Modifieds – With their growing car count the F4’s racing action is improving, but still no one has been able to touch the #27 of Doug Pokupec come feature time.  In the heats #21 Kevin Job split the wins with #43 John Verney.  In the feature #3 Mark Millard got tied up with #77 Paul Krezmian and both cars landed in the corner one wall, collecting #00 James Czakowsky.  When the green flag dropped #21 Kevin Job started to run away with the lead, but had the #27 Doug Pokupec and #43 John Verney right on his tail.  Pokupec made short work of the #21, and put his #27 in the lead, leaving Kevin Job to defend second against John Verney.  Out of corner four, in the back of the pack, the #3 Mark Millard got into trouble again, got loose, and banged the #9 Brian Nanticoke.  The caution flag flew for the #3 who now lay across the racing surface.  Racing continued cleanly after that incident, and at half the #27 of Doug Pokupec had the lead well in hand and the F4’s were spread out around the track.  The feature winner was #27 Doug Pokupec, second was #43 John Verney, and third was #21 Kevin Job.  #12 Dean Nevinger and #9 Brian Nanticoke rounded out the top five.  F4’s race at Flamboro every other week, and will return June 30th.

“Go Four” Mini Stocks – A great night for the #66 of Tony Darmon, who returned after a couple of weeks vacation to collect a natural hat-trick.  Darmon dominated the qualifying, winning both heat races.  In the feature #71 Barry Westman grabbed the lead early, and ran away from his pursuers the #3 Gunners Desrochers, and #17 Jim Hill.  In the back of the pack there were some men on the move.  #77 Bryn Rennie was looking to repeat his feature success from the previous week, #85 Robert Allerellie, current points leader in the Mini Stock division, was trying to pad his already commanding lead, and #66 Tony Darmon was making his way through traffic to win his third race of the night and complete the hat trick.  Tony Darmon caught up to the #71 of Westman, and after a short battle was able to put Barry in second.  Darmon took off with the lead, and Westman was left to defend his spot against the #77 and #85.  Bryn Rennie and Robert Allerellie were both able to get around the #71, but with two laps to go, nobody’s position was guaranteed.  A scrap for second continued until the checkers, but first was already taken by the time they got to corner four.  #66 Tony Darmon won the feature race with a significant lead, followed by #77 Bryn Rennie, #85 Robert Allerellie, #71 Barry Westman, and #26 Bryan Sweers.

Street Stocks – In qualifying, Randy “The Rocket” Rusnell took two of the heats in the #72, while the other two heats were won by #11 Manfred Henkel and #80 Rob Barr.  In the feature Manfred Henkel put the #11 out front early, and had to hold off a hard charging Randy Rusnell in the #72, and Bill Barfoot in the #4, to stay there.  Rob Barr in the #80 was also in the front five but was forced to retire pitside when he broke the back axle.  The Street Stocks stretched out around the track, and #72 Randy Rusnell tried to make up some ground on the #11 by going to the outside.  His attempt failed, and for his efforts he fell to fifth when #45 Dave Bennett lead a train of cars under him into second.  Rusnell ran out of time before he was able to regain any positions.  Manfred Henkel brought his #11 into victory lane for his first feature win of 2001.  He was followed by #45 Dave Bennett, #4 Bill Barfoot, #90 Andy Wheller, and #72 Randy Rusnell.

Thunder Cars – In qualifying, #12 Mike Post took the first heat win, and #50 John Burdick took the second.  After the inversion for the feature, #29 Steve Cashmore, in his first night out in his new car, was out in front of the pack.  As Cashmore pulled away from the field he left a battle behind him.  There was a scrap for position from second to fifth, involving #91 Randy Richard, #31 Kevin Gallant, #12 Mike Post, and #50 John Burdick.  While the battle raged on Cashmore drove away, and when the checkers were dropped only one driver had gained a position.  Steve Cashmore, in his new #29 and on his first night out, won the Thunder Car feature.  He was followed by points leader #91 Randy Richard, #12 Mike Post, #31 Kevin Gallant, and the #50 John Burdick.

The first of many King of the Hill races was run, and what an exciting event.  9 cars signed up to do battle on the 1/3 mile oval that is Flamboro Speedway.  We had pickup trucks, Hondas, a Hyundai, and a Mustang.  In the final round the red Honda Prelude faced off against the black 5.0 Ford Mustang.  Into corner one the better cornering Prelude had the lead, but down the back straight he did not have near enough horse power to keep with the flying Mustang.  In the corners the Prelude did battle back and out of four the cars were door to door.  But, as we had seen on the back cute, when the Mustang got pointed straight, it was gone.  The winner of our first ever King of the Hill race, Ian Mcyntyre, climbed out of the car to collect his trophy and cheque, and let everyone know he might be back to defend his title.  So, if you think this sounds like fun, if you think your car could fly around Flamboro, if you’re one of the fast and the furious, you’ll want to be back to Flamboro Speedway on June 30th for our next King of the Hill race event.

Just to bring you up to speed: Since the Late Model feature on June 9th, the night of the full moon and full tanks of aggression, drivers have been reminded that, while aggressive racing is both fun and exciting, there will be no tolerance for unnecessary roughness.  Bumping and shoving and nosing in corners, rubbing down the straightaways, and generally any action that puts another driver in a dangerous position, will not be tolerated.  Penalties were issued after June 9th, and will continue to be issued should more of this kind of racing continue.  The black flag will be used for rough driving calls, and drivers are expected to respect those calls.  The points battle is heating up, and the three-track alliance has made the competition close and competitive, and we would like to see more drivers coming to the track, and leaving with their cars intact.
